So I finally got my internet to work on campus and in the dorms after a very confusing couple of days.
I guess to keep everyone up to date with my whole trip, I’ll start with the flight. Everything went smoothly on the plane which is surprising because I was with Allison France and flights don’t normally go well for her haha. I got less than two hours of sleep which resulted to a very tiring day ahead of me. We landed and took a bus from munich to regensburg. We were almost to Regensburg when we heard a loud noise on the bus and we had a flat tire. We pulled off and changed buses and got back on the road.
When we got to Regensburg, we had the rest of the day to get settled in and unpack. Allie and I are in the same suite in addition to three other German boys. Needless to say it wasn’t the cleanest apartment/dorm when we arrived. We have 5 bedrooms, two toilets, two showers, and 5 sinks. The dorm isn’t THAT bad, but also not as nice as richmond at Murray... We walked around downtown Regensburg and ate at a nice restaurant as a group. I think the hardest part about getting used to Regensburg is not being able to read the menus at restaurants. I had no idea what I ordered at the restaurant but it turned out to be really good pasta! After what felt like the longest day in the world, we went back and immediately went to sleep!
The next day I felt 100% better and refreshed! Also, it was my 20th birthday! In the morning we took a tour of the University of Regensburg campus. Afterwards we were dying to find internet. We went to the mall and sat in the "hot spot" lounge for over an hour and it was the best birthday present I could have asked for. That night we went to Dult Fest which is pretty much Regensburg's version of Oktober Fest. I had my first liter of Radler (half lemonade half beer) and it was pretty gross. It was much better than a regular beer, that's for sure, but still not my favorite drink... We wandered around down town Regensburg in the pouring rain for the rest of the night trying to go somewhere to celebrate my birthday. We couldn't find anything and just went home! I had a great birthday just being able to be in Germany!
Saturday, our entire group (18 students and 2 advisors) took the train to Munich. It was about an hour and a half train ride to a bus stop and from there, we went to Dachau. Getting to go to a concentration camp was so eye opening and a great experience. My mom warned me it would be "sobering to say the least" and she was right. (Pictures on facebook) We went to down town Munich afterwards and IT WAS SO CROWDED! It reminded me of new york or something. So many people everywhere!!! We had another hard experience with the menu at the restaurant we went to. I just ended up getting a pretzel.
We finally got to sleep in on Sunday and it was great. This was our first day to kind of do things on our own and explore a little more. After getting 10 hours of sleep Allie, Paige, and I woke up and went looking for lunch. We stumbled across the CUTEST cafe/restaurant called Cafe Fiirstenhof where I got my first ever Schnitzel Wiener (because it was the only thing on the menu I could understand) it was pretty good! We went on a boat ride to Vahalla that day as well. I'm sorry to say, I didn't quite understand its significance... It was a really beautiful columned building on a hill. It was so pretty once we finally climbed our way up there. On the inside there were a whole bunch of stone heads, I guess those people did something good, what? I don't know!
I started classes on Monday, but just my Ger101 and Ger105 classes. I don't have much to report about these, they seem like they will be pretty good. We went on a tour of Regensburg which was pretty interesting. Our tour guide rows for a club in Regensburg and told all the rowers (me, allie, and paige) we could come out one Saturday and row and I'm so excited!! Then...on Monday night....We went Karaokeing!!! This was the most fun I have had all trip. If you know me, you can imagine I was performing my heart out while singing Wannabe by spice girls, Ice Ice Baby, and Back to December by taylor swift.
Sorry this was so long, I will not make it this painful every time I blog haha. Hope you're happy mom :)
